A valuable role
Walkwise ambassadors have played a valuable role in helping to enforce a liquor ban in Queenstown’s central business district.
As one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist destinations, The Wakatipu’s population is typically around 25,000 on an average day but only 16000 of those people are permanent residents. The combination of so many visitors and plentiful alcohol has provided the town with some challenges.
Although the Walkwise team’s services range from assisting people to catch taxis, and providing general directions, they spend a lot of time minimising and managing alcohol issues in and around the town’s central business district.
Their services were particularly valuable in the lead up to a permanent liquor ban between 10 pm and 8 am in the town centre. During this time Walkwise ambassadors advised revellers that a ban was pending. Even though the ban was not yet in place, revellers were encouraged to stop drinking or to at least move indoors.
The team works closely with local police and the Queenstown Lakes District Council, attending regular update meetings to ensure they are aware of trouble spots and other issues. Walkwise also continues to work with licensed premises and their patrons to enforce the liquor ban and maintain the peace.
